Sometimes The Perfect Pet Picks You

When I was asked if I would like to contribute to the Pet60 “60 Reasons Why Life with Dogs is Best” Adoption Edition my immediate reaction was of course, yes! I could talk all day about why life with dogs is great – I can’t imagine life without them!

And while some people search for a long time to find the dog that is the best fit for their family, sometimes the perfect pet gets left on your doorstep.

Six years ago I was awoken by my mom on Thanksgiving morning. She called me downstairs because we had a visitor. I stumbled semi consciously to the top of the stairs to find my mom holding a pug dog. The breed of dog I’d always wanted but never had. I couldn’t believe my eyes.

My mom had found him wandering around outside and when she called to him, he came right to her. Below is a dramatic reenactment:

She brought him inside so he wouldn’t get hit by a car. He made himself completely at home instantly. Hopped on the couch with me and watched the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

By the end of the day, we were no closer to finding Pug’s owner. We put an ad on Craiglist and Petfinder. And the next day when they opened we called around to the local animal shelters and had him scanned for a chip at the vet (he didn’t have one.) Animal Control informed us that after 4 days he was legally ours. (Of course, I would not have kept him from his rightful owners if they contacted us after that. )

As the days turned to weeks it became clear that this pug was not lost, but abandoned. And as sad as that is, it was the best thing to happen for both of us.

So many things have happened in my life in the past six years – some good and some bad. But through it all Pug has been my rock. He inspired my writing this blog, he’s forged friendships with other pug owners and most of all he’s always there for a cuddle when I need it.

I’m not one to believe in fate, but I have to believe the universe meant for me and Pug to be together. He’s my soul pug so to speak. And I believe that if anyone visits an animal shelter they can find their own soul mate too. So, what are you waiting for? Your new best friend is waiting to make your life better!
