One of the best parts about the BlogPaws Conference was learning about new pet companies and meeting their representatives. One such company was Raw Paws Pet Food which has an online store and ships raw pet food to your door. I told them that I was pretty familiar with raw feeding and that I try to incorporate at least 10% raw food into my dog’s diet.
We kept in touch and recently I got the opportunity to try out one of the products from their lineup. I chose the salmon chunks because fish is not super common in the raw pet food market. Plus, I don’t eat fish myself and have no idea what to do with it so I was happy to have it portioned and ready to feed.
If you’ve never ordered frozen food items online I’ve included pictures to show you how they ship. The salmon was packed very securely inside a styrofoam cooler with a block of dry ice. It was still super cold inside despite sitting in the blazing sun for several hours on my front porch!
Again, I don’t eat fish, so I didn’t quite know what to expect. I thawed a few pieces of the salmon and assumed I could break it up. Totally not realizing that raw fish isn’t flaky. I decided to just serve it up as it was and let me tell you, the dogs had no problems devouring it. Molly ate hers so fast I didn’t even have time to take a picture.
I really should have taken a video of Pug eating his because the sounds were unbelievable. He was ripping apart that salmon like a wild animal! The one downside to the large piece was that he didn’t want to eat it out of the bowl and instead scoot it around the floor.
I didn’t appreciate raw fish juice all over the floor so I think I will try serving it on a plate next time. I have been serving them the salmon chunks in lieu of their kibble about once a week for a special treat.
Since they have to ship frozen products via 2-day shipping on dry ice the shipping prices are higher than regular goods (though still reasonable for the service you’re getting). As such, I wouldn’t recommend Raw Paws for trying one item here or there because it wouldn’t be cost-effective.
However, if you feed exclusively raw and go through food quickly it’s a great, convenient way to purchase your food. Especially since they do offer free shipping on orders over $199 and large value packs. Even though I don’t feed exclusively raw, I do have a small chest freezer so I have the freezer space to stock up. Something I would definitely consider doing since Raw Paws offers a lot of unique products that I don’t see offered in stores, too. I especially love their seafood selection.
