Mini Pumpkin Pies for Dogs

Thanksgiving is quickly approaching and I wanted my dogs to be able to celebrate along with me, safely, with a mini pumpkin pie just for them. Weruva kindly provided me with some of their Pumpkin Patch Up! pouches to create my pies. The pouches are handy single servings of their pure pumpkin puree and is wonderful to have on hand for dogs that occasionally get diarrhea or constipation.

I’ll begin with a photo led step-by-step and have the written instructions afterward if you want to print.

Preheat oven to 375. Place 1/2 cup of flour and 2 Tablespoons of cold coconut oil into your food processor (if you don’t have one, you can do this by hand with forks or a pastry cutter). This will be enough dough for two pies, so multiply the recipe as necessary.

Pulse until the coconut oil is well incorporated. Then, add cold water a little at a time, pulsing in between additions.

On the left it looks like couscous, but when you press it together you can see it sticks together nicely. You don’t want it to be overly sticky.

You can certainly roll it out and cut it, but I just divided it into two balls and then pressed it out by hand. Your flattened dough circles will be about 3 1/2 inches across for a standard muffin tin.

Cross two strips of parchment paper in each cup that will hold a pie shell. This will help them not to stick and make them easy to pull out of the pan.

Place your dough into the muffin cups and squish them around as needed. If you want, you can use the tines of a fork to give them a prettier edge. Pop them into the oven for 15-20 minutes, until they’re nice and golden.

When they’re done, let them cool in the pan.

While your pie shells are cooling, grab the ingredients for the pumpkin pie filling. Not pictured here is ground ginger which I apparently had run out of.

You can play around with the seasonings, just don’t be tempted to use pumpkin pie seasoning as it contains nutmeg which is not safe for dogs! I added 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon and just a tiny pinch of cloves. I would have added a tiny pinch of ground ginger had I had it on hand.

At this point the filling is ready to eat and would be a great treat on its own, as you can tell by Pug’s face. If you don’t want to mess with making the pie shells (or your dog has grain intolerance) you can simply serve the pumpkin filling out of a small dish for a great holiday treat.

Once they’re cool, pop the shells out using the strips of parchment.

And fill with your pumpkin pie filling!

I added a small dollop of Greek yogurt as “whipped cream”. Aren’t they cute?

Mini Pumpkin Pies for Dogs

For Pie Crust:

• 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
• 2 Tablespoons coconut oil
• 2-3 Tablespoons cold water

For Pumpkin Pie Filling:

• 2 Pouches Weruva Pumpkin Patch Up (or 3oz. pumpkin puree)
• 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
• pinch ground cloves
• pinch ground ginger
• Greek yogurt (optional)

Instructions:

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
2. Place flour and coconut oil in food processor and pulse until incorporated. Drizzle in water slowly until dough holds together.
3. Divide dough into 2 balls and press or roll into 3 1/2″ rounds.
4. Place each dough round into a muffin cup lined with parchment strips. Press edges with tines of fork if desired.
5. Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown. Allow to cool in pan.
6. Empty pumpkin pouches into small bowl.
7. Add cinnamon, cloves and ginger and mix together.
8. When pie shells are cool, remove from muffin pan and transfer to plate.
9. Divide pumpkin pie filling between the two shells.
10. If desired, place a small dollop of Greek yogurt in the center of each pie.

And a huge hit with the dogs. I’m looking forward to making a big batch for Thanksgiving and all my mom’s dogs. Not only will it be fun to include them in the celebration, pumpkin for dogs is super beneficial.
