With two senior dogs, treats and supplements that address joint health are always of interest to me. This past month, we have been testing out Cosequin Maximum Strength (DS) Plus MSM Soft Chews from Chewy.com.
There are a lot of hip and joint treats on the market nowadays, with varying levels of claims and beneficial ingredients. To be clear, the Cosequin Chews are truly a joint supplement in a treat form with high levels of glucosamine, chondroitin and MSM plus Omega-3s in each chew.
(Derived from shellfish)
600 mg Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) 400 mg Sodium Chondroitin Sulfate†
(Derived from bovine cartilage)
300 mg▴ Total Omega-3s
To start off, Cosequin recommends a double dose for the first 4-6 weeks and then dropping down to a maintenance dose. So, that is what I have done for the past month. Molly got two chews per day, and Pug got one.
The dogs both loved the taste of the Cosequin chews and came running when they heard the bag. I thought they had kind of an odd smell (which I assume is from the high concentration of supplements they contain) but since the dogs gobbled them up happily, it wasn’t a concern.
Now, it was harder to gauge Pug’s reaction to the chews because for the past few weeks we have been treating him for spinal compression and numbness. My hope is that the Cosequin is benefiting him even if it isn’t obvious.
With Molly on the other hand, I saw a dramatic difference. I really didn’t hope for or expect such great results. For background, a few months ago my vet and I decided to start treating Molly’s joint pain and stiffness with near daily medication. After a couple of weeks of the Cosequin chews, I found myself giving her the pain medication only once or twice a week! She was clearly moving easier and able to get up and moving much quicker from laying down.
Overall I can give the Cosequin Joint Health Chews an enthusiastic recommendation! Seeing is truly believing and the change I saw in Molly in just one month has made me a believer. While I have no problem giving daily medicine (better living through chemistry as I always say!) I definitely think it’s better to treat the source rather than the symptoms, which Cosequin seems to do.
Cosequin is available in a few different forms, but I find the chews very convenient and the dogs obviously enjoy their nightly treat. While it’s never really too early to start this type of supplement, I definitely recommend these for aging dogs that have shown signs of pain or stiffness.
