I was super intrigued by the PAW5 Wooly when it was introduced to me, because I had never heard of a snuffle mat before. And one of Pug’s very favorite activities is rooting around the kitchen floor looking for crumbs. I always say that he looks like a pig searching for truffles! I figured the Wooly would put his snuffle skills to use, and he could actually get something out of it besides the odd piece of dry pasta or toast crumbs.
The Wooly snuffle mat is 12″x18″ inches and comes in a pretty, neutral gray color. I actually like the aesthetic so much I would totally buy a larger version of the Wooly and use it as a rug! Plus, each Wooly is handmade with non-toxic upcycled materials. I always appreciate companies with sustainable practices.
The size is actually perfect for a wide variety of dog breeds. Plus, unlike a lot of other puzzles or slow feeders, you don’t have to worry about your dog’s snout being too big or too small to fit. Or, their face being too flat in the case of smooshy faces like pugs! The little…tendrils (??) of the Wooly mat are easily pushed aside to accommodate any size snout.
The Wooly can be used as a slow feeder, an enrichment toy, or both. When I tested it out, I put Pug’s food in it. It usually takes him less than 60 seconds to inhale his kibble. I’d say it took him about 5 minutes to root out 1/4 cup of food. I gave the mat a shake afterward and only one stray piece of kibble fell out, so he was able to find just about everything.
Setting the Wooly up is a breeze. You just dump the food or treats on, and I gave the tendrils a quick fluff to help them sink in. So, it’s a great option for busy mornings. It takes no longer than filling a food dish, and you can keep your dog busy 5x longer while you sneak out the door.
Overall I think the Wooly Snuffle Mat is a great addition. While the design is super simple, it is a great enrichment exercise for your dog to put their sniffing skills to work. And unlike some more advanced puzzle toys, even the um…less intelligent breeds can fully enjoy it (no offensive Pug). Plus, there are no pieces to find or put back together. And you can throw it in the washer and dryer to clean it up.
Disclaimer: I was sent a PAW5 Wooly in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own and as always, I never recommend products I don’t fully stand behind.
