The Importance of Pet Hydration + PetSafe Pet Fountain Giveaway {Closed}

Recently PetSafe asked me try one of their pet drinking fountains in conjunction with Pet Hydration Month. And let me tell you, I got totally schooled on the topic of pet hydration. I know how important proper hydration is to my health, but for some reason I had never really thought much about my dog’s water intake beyond keeping a bowl of clean water available for them.

PetSafe claimed that running, filtered water entices pets to drink more. I have to be honest, I was skeptical. But I should have known PetSafe wouldn’t lie to me! My old water bowl was only about 12-ounces and the dogs would go through about two bowls per day. So, when the Drinkwell Avalon Fountain arrived and held 70-ounces I thought I wouldn’t have to refill it often at all.

Well, after a few weeks of using it I estimate my dogs are now drinking about 50-ounces per day! Ideally, pets should drink about 1-ounce of water per pound of body weight, so they’re much closer to their optimum intake now.

It did take them about a day to understand that this was their new source of water. Molly initially would get freaked out if the stream of water hit her nose, but she quickly figured out she could drink from the sides. I intended for Molly to be able to drink out of the top reservoir so she didn’t have to bend down as far to drink, which is a really great feature for larger dogs. Naturally, she refuses to do it.

Setup was quick and easy once I got Pug out of my way and cleanup has been as well thanks to the filter. So far the most I’ve had to do was take it to the bathroom sink and give it a quick rinse to clean off residual slobber. Eventually I will break it down and give it a proper scrubbing (it’s also dishwasher safe) but it’s definitely stayed cleaner than my old water dish.

By far my most-asked question is whether or not the sound of the water makes me have to pee constantly. I’m happy to report that is does not even though I have it set up in my bedroom. It only took about a day for me to tune out the sound of the water. Also, the higher the water level the quieter it is. So if you want it to be quieter you can keep it topped up. I cannot hear the sound of the pump at all.

The most exciting part is that PetSafe has generously offered to give a Drinkwell Avalon Fountain to one of my readers! The giveaway will be open to U.S. residents and will run for 2 weeks. Check the Rafflecopter widget for complete terms and conditions, and good luck!
